5. Wipeout - Sony Playstation

While SEGA were busy trying to appeal to the hardcore gamer, Sony were looking at the larger picture. They were aiming to make gaming cool with the masses, which in the UK meant trying to tap into the clubbing culture of the mid-1990s.

For that there was no better game than Wipeout. Though experienced players will tell you that the game presents one of the most formidable challenges of its era, Sony and Psygnosis decided it would be the perfect title to put into clubs to try and get the "cool" kids playing, thanks to its futuristic visuals and superb soundtrack.

The gambit worked spectacularly and the PlayStation quickly made the Saturn look like a dinosaur in its own time by comparison.

While Wipeout isn't the best game on this list, it may well be the most important. It encapsulated everything that the PlayStation stood for during a time when the brand had yet to establish its own identity, allowing Sony to grab a foothold early on and then expand into the gaming behemoth it is today.

Sony's tactic was the polar opposite of the SEGA's and it ended up being a gamble that more than paid off for them.
