10 Best Gaming Remakes Of This Console Generation

2. Final Fantasy VII Remake

Resident Evil 2
Square Enix

This one made us nervous.

After five years of development, Square Enix's remake of the genre defining Final Fantasy VII landed this year and... it was good! It was actually good!

To clarify, Final Fantasy VII was not perfect. At all. Its sidequests were badly paced and lazily designed, its AI was often shambolic and the graphics ranged from amazing to awful.

And yet.

Those problems, big as they are, aren't what spring to mind when we think back on our time with FFVII. Rather, we think about the overwhelming amount of charm Square packed into the game's 30 hour run-time. Hanging out with Avalanche; dancing at the Honeybee Inn; fighting the Hell House alongside Aerith - these were some of our favourite moments of the year, and we hope Square Enix learns from them for the upcoming Final Fantasy XVI.

Final Fantasy is at its best when it gives you a world worth saving, filled with people you genuinely care about, and the FFVII Remake delivered that in style. We have no idea what's going to happen in future installments (especially after the mind-blowing ending), but we can't wait to spend more time with Cloud and co. this coming generation.
