6. Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars

From distracting add-ons to a game that was all about getting lost in minigames and new mechanics, Chinatown Wars was Rockstar's second attempt to make GTA "work" on lower spec hardware.

With GTA Advance being solid enough as a reminder of just how long ago 1997's original was and felt, Chinatown Wars returned again to Liberty City, yet played from a top-down perspective, with tons of The Warriors-esque minigames bringing general gameplay to life in fresh ways.

Rockstar knew that "traditional GTA" as it was post-Vice City, San Andreas and GTA IV wouldn't work, and playing Chinatown Wars is almost like they thought, "Hmm what would GTA be like, if it was developed by Nintendo?"

Seriously, it almost channels Warioware with all the cutaways, seeing you manually fill molotov cocktails, kick open a door if you've fell in a body of water, assemble a sniper rifle, crack safe codes and more.

It being such a drastically different GTA did put many people off, but go in knowing what to expect, and this remains a great shakeup of the standard formula.
