Whilst the first The Last of Us game is largely played from the point-of-view of Joel, Ellie's immunity to the cordyceps virus makes her the most important piece of the puzzle. In the sequel, she takes her space as an equal part playable character. This spitfire, who endeared everyone with her quick-wit and the tragic loss of her innocence, is not only the main character of overarching The Last of Us narrative, she's the beating heart of the series.

Confirming that such a major character from one of the biggest games of all time was a lesbian was a brilliant thing that can certainly be credited with opening up people's willingness to explore this subject matter more in the medium.
