10 Best LGBT+ Characters In Gaming History

7. Max - Life Is Strange

Life Is Strange Max Chloe
Dontnod Entertainment

Life is Strange has a good number of strong queer characters: Alex from True Colors, Finn and Sean from LiS2, and of course Chloe and Rachel from the first game and it's side-story. But, amongst all the debate around her, there is something special about Max Caulfield.

Not only is Max the protagonist of the first game in the series, in many ways she represents the folly and fragility of youth.

At one point, the time-travelling teenager makes a comment about "cute skater boys" and, at game's end, she can kiss male friend Warren. Some fans find this to be quiet a cold exchange however compared to the overwhelmingly positive reaction to locking lips with Chloe at the end of the world.

And so, the debate rages, what is Max's canon sexuality?

But our heroine is an 18-year old girl and perhaps the answer doesn't have to be set in stone at this point in her life. Max's ability to openly explore her feelings is honourable and at this stage it simply feels as though she is still figuring herself out. She's a quiet kid, with clearly minimal relationship experience, awakening to the world and her place within it.

Max's choices in Life is Strange should not divide gamers but unite them in the relatable hunt for self-actualisation.
