10 Best Nintendo Switch Games Of 2020
6. Super Mario 3D All-Stars
OK, let's address the multiple, looming Thwomps in the room first: yes, the exclusion of Super Mario Galaxy 2 is both incomprehensible and inexcusable. Yes, Nintendo expended the least amount of effort possible bundling this package together. And no, the price point probably doesn't justify a compilation of entirely unvarnished albeit classic games.
But what classics they are. Nearly quarter of a century on, Super Mario 64 continues to astound with its fluidity and freedom, even if the lack of 60 FPS and the the inadequate Joy-con analogue contrive to make it less playable than in 1996. Super Mario Sunshine remains a tropical treat in spite of its latter-day reputation, the radiant Delfino Isle being the most thematically holistic (holiday) hub amidst a series of atomised content. Mario Galaxy - though minutely surpassed by its successor - continues to eclipse superlatives. It is simply out of this world.
There's no question there should be more to this package: bunging in the three games' soundtracks as bonus content smacks of parsimony. But forget the price, and the missed opportunity: this is still a trio of era-defining, industry-changing games in one box. That gets a massive gold star from us.
