10 Best No.5's In Gaming History
9. Devil May Cry 5
Devil May Cry 5 provides an interesting contrast with the previous entrant.
While God of War: Ragnarok marries its hack-and-slash gameplay with the trappings of modern game design (open worlds, loot, chatty companions) DMC 5 is unapologetically old-school - a linear action game whose only purpose is to give the player a horde of demons to kill and make them look good while doing it.
Character action games have always been defined by excess, and DMC 5's trio of playable characters embrace that ethos to spectacular effect. Nero has eight different robot arms to choose from, each with their own special attack; series figurehead Dante arrives packing damn near every trick he learned in the previous four games, plus a few more; and newcomer V summons demonic monsters to fight in his stead (a trick so neat Platinum Games stole it wholesale for Bayonetta 3).
After the relatively disappointing Devil May Cry 4, the fifth entry in Capcom's signature demon-bashing series is a riotous comeback that deftly treads the line between spectacle and chaos. The thrill of navigating through the onscreen noise to nail that coveted SSStylish rating is second-to-none, and if this really is the last time we see Dante and co., then Capcom can be proud that they gave the series the gloriously OTT send-off it deserved.
(Also, Devil Trigger is still one hell of a bop).
