10 Best Open-World Games Of 2018
2. Monster Hunter: World
The highest-selling game Capcom has ever produced? Check. A major contributor toward generating record profits for the developer in 2018? Check. An incredible open world deserving of both those accolades? That's a big fat check. Despite its historic popularity in Japan on handhelds, the anomalous surge in popularity for the series triggered by World has retrospectively been one of 2018's biggest surprises, but it's not at all a chore to discern why.
The attention to detail lavished on each of World's self-contained ecosystems, as well as the wildlife both big and small that reside within them, is staggering to behold. From the typically-sized insects and mammals acting out day-to-day survival to the monolithic monsters perched at the top of each biome's food chain, traversing World's terrain is as much a treat as strategizing how best to utilize it to best conquer its apex predators, a harmonious combination that truly never gets old.
The slow-paced combat and steep learning curve won't be to everyone's taste, but if you've even the slightest interest in experiencing a masterclass in world design, World is worth the price of admission on that basis alone and who knows, you just might grow to love its mechanical quirks in the process.
