No longer can DC claim to be the only comic book institution to have successfully infiltrated video games. As it turns out, Marvel's web-slinger, like the Dark Knight before him, is the perfect catalyst for A-grade open world adventures. All that was needed to prove that fact was a team as passionate for the source material as Rocksteady was with the Arkham series.

After all, Treyarch's Spider-Man 2, as bland as its version of Manhattan was, proved how exhilarating the simple act of traversing a concrete jungle in Spider-Man's shoes could be, and that was more than a decade ago. Imagine what a Spider-Man game not restricted to being a cash-grab movie tie-in, one with its own bespoke story and well-rounded cast loyal to their origins could achieve.

Insomniac stepped up to the plate to answer that question, the payoff being Marvel's greatest video game adaptation to date. Does it surpass the Caped Crusader's campaign under Rocksteady's tenure? Not quite. It comes oh so close, but Insomniac fell into the same trap Arkham Knight did. Too much of Manhattan is filled with unnecessary and repetitive side content and shallow stealth missions, but hey, this is Insomniac's first visit to New York. Sequels are sure to follow, and Spider-Man's first current-gen outing is as solid a base as anyone could hope for.
