10 Best Opening Levels In Video Game History

9. Kingdom Hearts

THE LAST of us
Square Enix

No opening cutscene has ever blown me away quite like Kingdom Hearts. Playing for the first time on PlayStation 2, I thought there was no way the system could have handled visuals like what was on display. It was instantly captivating.

The first playable sections are a complete contrast to each other. The first, dreamlike tutorial doubles as allowing you to choose which skills you would like to excel in, whilst showing off the game mechanics and the mix of Disney and Final Fantasy-style mythologies. Very little is explicitly explained in words, adding to the mysterious ambience.

This leads straight into the idyllic Destiny Islands, full of sun, sand, sea and palm trees - totally different to the dark, gothic sections of the tutorial.

Showing off these two extremes of location showed that there were almost no limits, and made you want to find out where the game would take you next.
