10 Best PlayStation 2 Multiplayer Games

10. Twisted Metal: Black

This dark destruction derby series in many ways embodied the edgy image of the PS1 and PS2. With its warped psychotic characters, bizarre live-action cutscenes, and murky atmosphere, Twisted Metal was a shooter/driver hybrid that truly separated Sony's consoles from their competitors. Twisted Metal: Black was one of the best multiplayer games on the PS2, letting you and a friend team up and play through the whole campaign together, or have up to four of you go head to head in vast arenas; all of them set in a dirty world that looks like a cataclysmic fusion between Mad Max and mid-western America. For its time, Twisted Metal Black's graphics were phenomenal. I'll always fondly remember decimating the houses and church of the Suburbs level - with its brown skies and black tornado looming in the distance - as my friends and I played cat-and-mouse with rockets, machine guns and ice cream vans that turned into giant death robots. The PS3 sequel doesn't quite have that same sinister energy as this outing, so if you want the quintessential Twisted Metal experience then grab three friends and head back to Black now.
