10 Best PlayStation 4 Indie Games

1. Spelunky

This one has been around for seven years now, and is arguably one of the games that kickstarted the indie gaming revolution. It's a testament to the game's endless replay value that seven years on from its initial release, it's available on the PS4 in pretty much exactly the same form it was in back in 2008. Spelunky is a 2D platformer in which you traverse procedurally-generated dungeons in search of the exit. Along the way you encounter various little nasties, and search the levels for treasure which you can then use to upgrade your equipment. Run-throughs of the game can easily be completed in under half an hour, but you only have one life with which to do it. The crazy emergent situations that emerge in Spelunky are of the sort that you'll always reminisce about with your buddies. Everything may be going smoothly, but a misplaced bomb can send you hurtling across the level straight into a spike pit. On the other hand, the completely destructible environments mean that you can potentially dig your way out of situations that seem completely doomed. It's a riveting formula with a timeless appeal. Adding to the fun are multiplayer modes and daily challenges - in which you get just one chance to try and complete randomly-generated levels that are the same for everyone, then, after which you can check out your ranking on online leaderboards.
