10 Best Pokémon Appearances In Detective Pikachu
9. Torterra
Torterra is perhaps the strangest inclusion here, as there are many cuter characters with more screen time than the Grass starter throughout the movie. It doesn’t really get a developed personality or even particularly a visual gag, but it’s part of probably the biggest set piece of the entire film, so deserves a special mention.
It’s one of many examples of the movie not just understanding Pokémon, but utilising what they bring to the table in unique and creative ways.
While visiting a Pokémon research centre, the main cast stumble across a Torterra sanctuary and note that the scientists are experimenting on the size of the creatures, but that they all look regular sized. The kids in the cinema might not spot the foreshadowing, but it’s highlighted pretty heavily nonetheless.
The whole sanctuary turns out to have been built on the backs of giant Torterras, and as they wake they begin a series of earthquakes. Though we don’t see much of the Torterras themselves aside from the occasional beady eye, we see the action revolve around them as the characters flee to safer ground.
Though there’s not much of Torterra itself, the movie would be missing a huge chunk of action without it.
