10 Best PS2 Games Of All Time
3. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
Hideo Kojima’s insane fever-dream of a stealth action series, Metal Gear Solid, has been a staple of the video game world for decades. Quite possibly the strongest entry in the entire saga, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, blew our collective minds when it arrived on the PlayStation 2 in 2004.
Set in 1964, this prequel introduced Naked Snake (better known nowadays as Big Boss) as he traversed a Soviet jungle in an attempt to rescue a defecting Russian rocket scientist and take down a rogue FOX agent who was believed to have defected to the USSR.
This game introduced a number of new mechanics to the series which included certain camouflage being more effective in certain environments, having to kill and eat animals in order to keep Snake energised, and having to manually heal injuries such as broken limbs.
Alongside the new mechanics, MGS3 had some of the best writing and characters that we’d seen in the franchise. Unlike in MGS5, we actually got a complete story with a proper ending, and what an ending it was. This was easily one of the most heart-breaking and bittersweet conclusions to a game that a lot of us would have experienced at this point in time.
I’m not crying. You’re crying.
