4. Pentiment (2022)
Coming from Obsidian Entertainment, the team behind Fallout: New Vegas and Outer Worlds, Pentiment is an engrossing RPG which was unlike anything else the developers had done before.
Set within 16th century Bavaria, players take on the role of travelling artist Andreas. They've just taken up a residency in the town of Tassing at the start of the game when they become embroiled in a murder conspiracy. From here, the bulk of the game is spent choosing which of the breadcrumb trails of clues to follow to uncover the truth.
As players become more acquainted with the inhabitants of this lusciously animated world designed to look like medieval illustrations, they’ll begin to form relationships with each of them. Nothing about this multifaceted tale is ever black and white, however. Players must use their own wit and instincts to draw their own conclusions while talking to each of the suspects.
Brought to life with some of Obsidian's best writing to date, Pentiment is a riveting and thoroughly engaging whodunnit set within a fantastically realised historic setting.
Releasing in the same week as God Of War Ragnarök, however, it’s not surprising that that this award-winning thriller went overlooked.
