10 Best Rockstar Games Protagonists - Ranked
6. Niko Bellic
GTA IV is an interesting game; it was beloved when it released, received critical acclaim, and sold like gangbusters.
Yet nowadays it seems like something of a redheaded step-child in the series. GTA IV felt like Rockstar trying to make a more serious game following the madness that was San Andreas, only to produce something that's brilliant, but ill-fitting in the overall catalogue.
What makes the game brilliant however, is its tough-as-nails protagonist: The Serbian immigrant, Niko Bellic. An angry man who spent time in the army, Niko comes to America in search of the proverbial dream, but is dragged into a criminal underworld by his dumb cousin and underhanded associates. He's a stranger in a strange land, and that was the perfect analogy for gamers playing GTA IV.
Niko is a pretty simple guy; one who feels let down by everyone around him; one who is tired of killing for the benefit of the rich; and one who just wants to live large in a new country. It makes Niko's story all the more tragic knowing how much he just wants to leave it all behind. He's not the most relatable or charismatic but Niko is one of the more realistic.
