Score breakdown: Appears twice in 16 critic lists (10 appearances for the series), and wins as series favourite in one fan poll. Tight competition for best mission with a four-way 3 nomination tie, but Overdose sneaks the win by one nomination.

Eyebrows will be raised no doubt, what with modern Assassin’s Creed leaning heavily towards the action end of the stealth/action spectrum, but in Unity and especially Syndicate, the franchise placed greater emphasis on stealth than it had before, or arguably since.

Overdose, or the Assassination of Dr. Elliotson, is one of six pure assassination missions in the game. All the standard stealth boxes are ticked: multiple access points, guards to sneak past, and plentiful gadgets, all wrapped in the suitably slick, entertaining standard you expect from Assassins’ Creed.

But where Overdose shines is atmosphere. You make your way through dimly lit corridors, past patients crazily rocking back and forth, over tiles slick with blood, all while the screams of inmates undergoing unspeakable treatment dig horribly into your ears. It’s an oppressive place to be in, one drowned in abject human suffering. So when you take Elliotson down it’s a glorious middle finger to a crooked establishment and an outstanding way to cap off the level.

Overdose is neither that long nor complex – A Bad Penny is arguably the better stealth mission, while Kenway Mansion wins for nostalgia – but its superb atmosphere and satisfying finale clinches it the title of the franchise’s best mission.
