3. Life Of The Party - Thief II: The Metal Age
Score breakdown: 5 appearances in 16 critic lists, and 11 nominations from 6 fan lists. Best mission won by clear fan majority with 17 nominations out of 63 (14 missions nominated).
Thief, not surprisingly, is pure old school stealth. Fighting is an extremely dicey proposition, and with every guard and civilian packing the razor-sharp hearing of a cat you have to work real hard to stay out sight and ear. Patience, planning and perseverance are the order of the day.
Life of the Party follows the trend, doubly so because its late in the campaign, demanding all of a players skill and experience, and precision use every tool in Garret’s arsenal, to stay alive and steal enough loot to pay the rent.
But what earns it the popular vote is the setting. It is one of, if not the largest, level in the game, seeing you navigate the quintessentially Thief environment of open rooftops appropriately dubbed The Thieves’ Highway, before entering a complex, multi-floored structure crawling with guards and civilians.
That size makes it ripe for exploration, duly rewarded with little gems of world-building, like a crazy astronomer building a rocket ship, a necromancer's spire complete with zombies, and a greenhouse with a tame spider.
Thief is tough, and Life of the Party fully embraces the difficulty, but it is what lies off the beaten track that makes it special.
