10 Best Underground Areas In Video Games

6. The Depths (Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom)

This entry offers something of a contrast to the previous one.

Whereas Eden Ring's Siofra River dazzles players immediately, your first visit to Tears of the Kingdom's Depths will likely leave you nonplussed. A dimly lit, visually sparse underground where you can barely see three feet in front of you? Yeah, thanks Nintendo, but I think I'll head back above ground where the fun is.

Frankly, no one would blame you for abandoning the Depths after that first lacklustre impression. Why would you want to spend your time squinting through a gloomy cave system when the vast, vibrant land of Hyrule is waiting for you on the surface? But for those who take the plunge, the Depths offers three words you'd never thought would be put together: Nintendo Survival Horror.

Nintendo have dabbled in horror before, but the Depths is its most unnerving creation yet. Enemies lurking here are far harder than the ones dwelling on the surface, and resource management becomes a must if you want to make a proper go at exploring Tears of the Kingdom's underground civilization. And (minor spoiler alert), the King Gleeok fight is the best/most heart-attack inducing surprise boss battle since Lara Croft was ambushed by a T-Rex in the original Tomb Raider.
