10 Best Underground Areas In Video Games

4. The Underground (Undertale)

The Underground may be the most unimaginative name on this list but, as the above picture indicates, nothing else about the world of Undertale is in danger of being tarred with that brush.

Undertale may be fast approaching its tenth anniversary, but time has done nothing to dull the edge of its story of exiled monsters and the kid tasked with saving (or dooming) them all. While much of the game's acclaim stems from its memorable characters and tremendous soundtrack (the work of composer/developer/writer/Last Son of Krypton Toby Fox), Undertale wouldn't be nearly as heartwrenching without the world it takes place in. Or, more specifically, the way the world reacts to your actions.

Undertale essentially lets you be as violent as you like, and should you indulge your murderous tendencies on the game's aptly named Genocide route the world around you reacts accordingly. The people around you become more angry and grief-stricken, the music becomes funereal and tragic, and the game makes sure to press the full weight of your actions on your conscience. Naturally, those taking a Pacifist route can expect a much different experience.

The true value of Undertale comes from replaying it to see how your actions affect The Underground and its inhabitants, and how you feel about the person your journey has shown you to be. After all, despite everything, you're still you.
