10 Best Video Game Final Bosses Of All Time

3. Xemnas - Kingdom Hearts 2

ODIN God of War Ragnarok
Square Enix

This is the kind of final boss that makes a fanbase wait over a decade for the sequel.

Xemnas is easily one of the longest boss fights in video game history, with nine phases to his name. First, there's the fight against his base form near the end of the game, an exciting test of your reaction time and knowledge of the UI.

The phases that follow when Xemnas merges with Kingdom Hearts to become a giant mecha dragon thing test your knowledge of the gliding mechanic and your ability to handle large mobs. You have to dismantle Xemnas' giant mecha dragon bit by bit, while being assaulted on all sides by Nobodies. These phases really sell how large this thing is, as you have to work your way up to Xemnas multiple times before it finally goes down.

This leads into the final and best phase of the fight, which is essentially the first phase but faster. Once more, the player's knowledge of the reaction command system is put to the test, as well as their adaptability. You have to dodge, use reaction command, and block, all the while getting in however many hits you can.

No one can say Xemnas went down easy or quickly, and God bless this boss for that.
