The legacy of Final Fantasy VII and its iconic cast has been so persistent over the years that it's easy to forget that two of its main characters were secrets. Nothing since the original game's release has treated them as optional.

In fact one of them, Yuffie, was the protagonist of FFVII Remake Intergrade - an additional chapter and side-story to the main game. The other of those characters is goth vampire edge-boi Vincent Valentine.

In the original Playstation release, Yuffie could only be unlocked via finding her as a random encounter. And recruiting Vincent required uncovering a secret code and freeing him from a locked coffin.

What's strange is that both of these characters are fairly vital to the plot. Without Yuffie, you never learn about Wutai - the world's only other super power and threat to the evil Shinra Corporation - and the story of war between the two that informs a lot of your understanding of the world.

Vincent is the bigger reveal however, as only by unlocking this secret character do you reveal a breadth of information that is essential to fully understanding the backstory that ultimately lead to the events in the game. He's probably the most critical hidden reveal in gaming history.
