Though there's some degree of debate over who the true overarching villain of the Souls series is, there's a solid argument to be made that it's Manus, the Father of the Abyss, who makes an appearance in Dark Souls' Artorias of the Abyss DLC.
Given the series' generally vague approach to lore and world-building, fans may not have expected to meet the party responsible for creating the never-ending expanse of darkness known as the Abyss that threatens to destroy the world throughout.
But Artorias of the Abyss takes place 100 years in the past, where players face off against and defeat Manus.
And so, even with Manus being dead long before the mainline events of the Dark Souls games, the Abyss he created continues to pervade, ensuring he has a potent, terrifying legacy far beyond his demise.
