4. Elite: Dangerous
Space travel seems to be a running theme throughout this list. It's not because I'm particularly into this sci-fi mumbo-jumbo (give me a sword over a lightsaber any day), but because recently developers have really begun using the space setting in interesting new ways. Elite: Dangerous is for those seeking a space-faring experience that most closely actually exploring the Milky Way galaxy (if it was filled with one-person spaceships and we'd discovered the ability to travel at light-speeds). Over 160,000 accurately mapped star systems are already in the game, with plenty more to come, all of which can be visited by the player. While Elite is a persistent online universe with plenty of players in it, don't expect to be in heart-stopping dog-fights all the time (there are only up to 32 players in every instance of an area). Much of the game is spent simply travelling through space, as you seek distant worlds with resources to mine for and trade. Combat is scarce, but it's riveting when it does happen because if your ship gets destroyed then you have to start from scratch (though with your money, reputation and ranking intact). This is the ultimate space purist's sim, as much for those happy to simply explore a huge, impressive realisation of the Milky Way galaxy in solitude, as it is for those looking to be space bandits, or interstellar business tycoons. Elite requires a powerful Mac, but if it's up to the job then running it is sure to impress your PC mates.
