The endless Half Life 3 memes aside, the need for a resolution to the episode 2 cliffhanger was what the fans truly wanted from a Half Life game - not one in VR without the iconic crowbar wielding Freeman. All these quibbles aside, Half Life Alyx is not only a great VR game but a great game regardless.

The world around you is oppressive and alien and the headcrabs have never been so terrifying. The Combine are truly something to be feared when they are just inches from your face. Alyx is first and foremost a horror game as much of it is spent in claustrophobic and alien places as you traverse City 17. A mini flashlight illuminating dark shifting corners as you try avoiding the many horrific fauna and flora around you makes HL Alyx a creepy and intense experience.

Your weapons can be upgraded as you progress, but it’s the gravity gloves that steal the show here. They may not be as iconic as the gravity gun, but catching grenades and tossing objects has never been so fun! Half Life Alyx is a gorgeous looking VR title that's dripping with a dense atmosphere and plenty of scares. It’s quite simply the best VR game to date.
