10 Best Weapons In DOOM History - Ranked

2. Pistol - Doom

Doom Eternal Shotgun
GT Interactive

The pistol from the original Doom makes the list for as much as it ISN'T as for what it IS.

While later versions of the pistol could be upgraded to a very reasonable weapon, in the original Doom it was just that : a pistol. A single shot every time you pulled the trigger, meaning the quicker you were on the mouse, the more lead you could get flying.

So, why does such an unremarkable weapon make the list? Because of its place as the very first weapon you pick up in the very first game of a franchise that has now been running for almost thirty years.

I'm showing my age here, but upon booting up the original Doom for the first time, it was like the gates of heaven opening. High-res graphics? Check. A cool protagonist and even cooler enemies? Check. Multiplayer? Ray traced lighting? Secret rooms? Cheat codes? Check.

Doom was like nothing gamers had ever seen before, crashing university servers with downloads and multiplayer games and convincing millions of people who burned through the nine free shareware levels to mail away (yes, snail mail) for a floppy disk with the two remaining chapters. It literally changed gaming forever.

And it all started with that simple pistol and it's tinny 'Pow Pow' sound as you exploded a barrel to kill two possessed soldiers and started calculating how many hours you could play before you needed to sleep.
