1. Shadow of the Colossus Fourth Colossus: Phaedra
Shadow of the Colossus was such a fantastic example of how to truly drown the player in immersion. The plot while simple, is brilliant, the controls for the most part are responsive and even to this day, has one of the best physic engines Ive even seen. For those who havent done battle with the Colossi before, Ill explain. The premise of the game is too defect sixteen Colossi to retrieve their soils in order to save your love. So, yeah, not the most explosive plot, but what Shadow of the Colossus does far better than even my beloved Silent Hill 2 is creating a feeling of crushing loneliness. Theres hardly any music in the game, only the sound of the wind hollowing through the hills and hidden tombs, and drives you towards the only friend and means of transport: Agro, who is your horse. Now, not wanting to ruin the plot Ill stop there, but its definitely worth checking out. Right, three Colossi down, each one more interesting and challenging than the last, and the enjoyment flat is flying high. I wouldnt be foolish in thinking the next encounter would be anything less of an enjoying skirmish with a moving hill top. Well, like an asthmatic man blowing into a balloon, the next battle failed to inflate my excitement. Phaedra, the fourth Colossus was such a disappointment because it had nothing that made the others stimulating. There so almost zero strategy, climbing the beast is painful only because it glitches out like a mother, and I swear it takes the longest to kill... but that might be because time stops as it is so tedious. Even though Phaedra, the seventh - and maybe the ninth - Colossi do balls up the formula, it doesnt ruin the title and proves a game doesnt have to be Portal-perfect to be an astonishing experience.
