10 Biggest Gaming Controversies Of 2017 (So Far)

1. Far Cry 5's Religious Setting

Far Cry 5

For the first time ever in the series, Far Cry 5 is taking place on American soil - and not everyone is happy about it.

Although the franchise has always acted as a sort of criticism of American bravado, Far Cry has managed to avoid any major backlash thanks to its exotic settings and locations. But now that it's chosen to cast its villains as being part of a gun-running religious cult occupying a town in Montana, the developers have come under fire for targeting a particularly sensitive aspect of American culture.

It's all been overblown as nobody can really know how political the game is going to be until it's released next year, and the studio itself has been very careful to not publicly acknowledge the impact that any contemporary issues may have had on the game during its development.

But that hasn't been enough to squash the controversy surrounding the title, and the constant barrage of think pieces about Far Cry 5's provocative setting don't seem to be stopping anytime soon.
