10 Biggest Missed Opportunities In Fighting Game History
9. Mortal Kombat Vs DC Universe's Empty Roster
Do you want to find a gaming genre that handles crossovers with gleeful vigour and bone-crunching action? Then, boy howdy, you better look at fighting games.
The genre is awash with epic crossovers, including pop-culture character cameos and full-on IP mashing titles. Marvel vs Capcom, Smash Bros., Street Fighter X Tekken, the list goes on! Where does MK vs DCU stand on that spectrum? Well, it's more towards the mundane end.
MK vs DCU is not an atrocious game. It handles well, has a fun story and is the kind of bizarre crossover gaming fans live for. But, it's also a surprisingly hollow title that's nowhere near as bombastic as it should be. A big reason for this stems from the pretty barren roster of playable characters.
The title boasts (including unlockables) twenty-two characters altogether, eleven from MK and eleven from DC. This is woefully low, considering the game is splitting itself between two massive IPs. There isn't even the excuse of technical limitations, as previous games had more characters, with Armageddon completely dwarfing it with a staggering 62 playable fighters.
Where's Johnny Cage, Kung Lao or Mileena? Where's Robin, Cyborg or Harley Quinn? Even just five additions to each side could have made the game fuller. *sigh* oh well, at least Injustice exists.
