10 Biggest PlayStation Risks (That Totally Backfired)
3. PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale
Another prime example of Sony chasing Nintendo, but this time not in the hardware stakes.
It's not unreasonable to assume that most gamers are aware of Smash Bros. in some capacity. Nintendo's beat 'em up franchise has a massive fanbase, to the point where even some familiar (but not owned by) PlayStation faces have dropped in. Solid Snake and Cloud Strife, to name a couple, are in various Smash entries across the years.
Sony wanted in on that action, pitting first party stalwarts like Nathan Drake, Sly Cooper and... Killzone 2's Colonel Radec against each other.
It was already off to a rocky start with its limited line up, but perhaps the gameplay could make up for its less-than-stellar cast?
Sadly not. Yet whilst not terrible, it just wasn't very good. Nowhere near as fun or engaging, it failed to hit the mark with fans and critics. Many saw it as Sony's attempt at cashing in on something Nintendo made popular, and rightly so.
This saw All-Stars only sell about a million units, leading to Shuhei Yoshida canning any hope of an All-Stars Ultimate in the future.
