10 Biggest Pokémon Controversies
1. Protest Groups
Three major groups have had it in for Pokémon since the beginning, all for completely separate reasons. Strange, as all three groups are usually known for being so relaxed and carefree.
First up, the Christian church. The game’s characters have been compared to demons, and the inspiration from myths, supernatural beings or eastern religion has been called blasphemous. Then of course there’s evolution... but thankfully in 2000, the Pope placed on record that the church had no problem with the ‘inventive imagination’ involved in the Pokémon games.
Next up are PETA, who even made a mock up game called Pokémon Black & Blue which highlighted the "animal fighting" nature of the gameplay. The activists were roundly mocked for priorities, and promptly went back to booing Steve Irwin on his anniversary. Stay classy, PETA.
Finally, somewhat contrasting both the Christian church’s standpoint and the fact that Nazi imagery has popped up more than once, Pokémon has been accused of promoting Zionism by the Saudi Arabian government.
Zionism is a complex and sensitive issue about the protection of the state of Israel, but apparently the Pokémon games are full of secret, stone mason-esque symbols designed to brainwash kids into promoting the Jewish agenda.
Who knew?
