1. Star Wars Battlefront II

Developer DICE's Star Wars Battlefront II is easily one of the most controversial games of the past decade. It was a good game with a solid single player campaign - a feature notably absent from its predecessor.

The problem was that all of that choked to death, buried under publisher Electronic Arts' predatory greed that came in form of loot boxes and an imbalanced, RNG-based progression system that encouraged a pay-to-win model.

Critics certainly didn't shy away from acknowledging these issues, but the underlying game made them pretty forgiving, earning Battlefront II a better-than-deserved 66 Metacritic score. They praised the scope of the 40-player multiplayer, the gunplay, and the vehicles, but were more tepid on the single player story.

Fans were a lot less tolerant, bombing Metacritic with 0-score reviews, accusing EA of basically turning a video game into full-blown gambling. Their outcry was so load that it resulted in EA getting the most downvoted post in Reddit history, and actual legislation targeting their practices.

EA have since pivoted to a focus on single-player Star Wars games. Can't imagine why.
