The classic PlayStation Dual Shock control pad is one of the single greatest controllers in the history of console gaming. Few controllers before or since have managed to match up to the comfort, quality and functionality of the pad, so it's no wonder that Sony have barely altered the core design since it made its debut all those years ago.

That doesn't mean they haven't tried though. With the PS3 on the way Sony used E3 2005 to highlight their concept for a new control pad that could replace the Dual Shock design.

The results were disastrous. The pad looked like something that Batman would be ashamed to keep in his utility belt and uproar followed practically right after the initial announcement. Sony were very quick to backpedal, stating that the controller was little more than a conceptual design and didn't necessarily reflect the final model.

The turnaround was completed when it was eventually revealed that the PS3 would have its very own Dual Shock pad, but for a while Sony fans were left with an awful taste in their mouths thanks to this terrible surprise.

Of course, it wouldn't be the last time that Sony would shock the gaming world with a terrible E3 surprise...
