10 Biggest WTF Moments In Mass Effect History
6. Saren's Suicide
The Mass Effect franchise has seen villains of various statures come and go, but the best still remains Saren, whose cold, calculated demeanour and sleek, intimidating design made him an instantly sinister and very memorable opponent.
However, what elevates Saren into a truly great villain is, oddly enough, his humanity, which grounds his character and keeps him from becoming just another cookie cutter video game bad guy. During the final encounter, should you play your cards right, Shepard can actually appeal to the latent goodness inside Saren, which will relieve him of Sovereign's indoctrination briefly enough to allow Saren to kill himself.
If you are not prepared for it Saren's suicide it can come as a complete shock; one that packs a substantive emotional punch because it reveals the true tragedy at the core of his character.
The fact that this outcome is optional makes it all the more special; there are many players who never got to experience this moment during their first playthrough. It's a dramatically rewarding surprise that adds an extra layer of pathos to Shepard's triumph over his first scuffle with the Reapers.
