Remember all that stuff about Mario being an innocent space for kids and adults alike? Apparently Nintendo threw that out the window during the development of Super Mario 64.

Released on the Nintendo 64, Super Mario 64 revolutionized gaming on a three-dimensional plane. It also revolutionized dying on a three-dimensional plane. The death animations in Mario 64 are fairly well-known, but none moreso than his drowning one, which features intense writhing and spluttering as our child-friendly champion claws desperately for his life, only to succumb to a watery grave. From a shocked-looking Mario sprite leaping into the air to a full, 3D model drowning before your very eyes. How do you feel about losing a life now?
