10 Biggest WTF Video Game Moments Of 2016 (So Far)

1. Dark Souls 3, And The Mystery Of Poise

Poise is a crucial stat in the Dark Souls series that affects how easily your character staggers, so wearing super-heavy armour and other poise-boosting equipment means you can walk more easily through enemy attacks without having your own attacks interrupted.

At face value, Dark Souls 3 appears to have poise - it's mentioned in item descriptions and in the game code. Yet players found that no matter how much poise-boosting equipment they had, it just didn't work, rendering the stat and all the item descriptions negligible.

To add to the confusion, hacky gamers went into the game code and found that poise was indeed a stat in the game, but was switched off, perhaps due to a bug. From Software said the stat was working as intended and left it at that. But let's not forget that these are the guys who said a mysterious pendant in Dark Souls 1 did something 'very special', then months later admitted it was a prank, so take that with a pinch of salt.

After a couple of months of complaints, confusion and wondering why the hell one should bother with heavy armour, redditor Back_like_Flint came up with an elaborate theory that poise (for some reason) actually relates to rolling. From hasn't confirmed the veracity of this theory, leaving Dark Souls 3 players in eternal limbo as to what the stat is really for - kind of fitting for a series with a reputation for being weird and nebulous...
