10 Bleak Game Over Screens That Crushed You

1. Batman: Arkham City

Finally, we come to the Batman Arkham franchise, which is widely regarded by fans and critics alike. Starting with 2009's Asylum, Rocksteady immediately set the standard for what a superhero game should be. In 2011, things got even better with Batman: Arkham City.

The game takes place in a sealed off section of GothamLed by Hugo Strange and his TYGER guards, the game played host to the Bat's finest interactive adventure. Everything about the game from scale to gameplay had received a massive upgrade. The developer also went the extra mile when it came to the little touches. Getting a game over got some extra layers as well.

In addition to the villains taunting Batman as he lies dying, Arkham City features a hidden conclusion. In the game's latter half, Batman is pinned down under rubble and left at the mercy of rampaging criminals. Switching over the Catwoman, you can choose to either abandon TYGER's money to rescue the Caped Crusader or simply walk out of Arkham City.

If Catwoman chooses to walk right and not rescue Batman, we cut to the credits with a heartbroken Barbara Gordon narrating. It's a haunting moment as the credits roll. Prisoners break out and quickly overrun Gotham with no Dark Knight to stop them.
