10 Bleak Video Game Endings You Can't Escape From
2. The Nightmare Will Never End - Bloodborne
Bloodborne's setting of a Victorian city infested with eldritch horrors and nightmares beyond your imagination isn't a very inviting concept, and each of the game's three endings reflects on that in its own unique way.
To give a quick summary, the in-game Yharnam is implied to be a collective dream hosted by the consciousness of the original hunter, Gherman.
Your character has three ways of dealing with this: they can wake up from the dream with Gherman's help, become its new host, or use it to transform themselves into the child of one of the Great Ones responsible for creating the dream.
Now, some of these endings may not sound so bad in the first place, but when you look into their true implications, you realize that everyone is screwed no matter what.
If you become the new host, you replace Gherman in his personal hell, having to trap hundreds of people inside your nightmare-infested mind. If you wake up, you doom everyone else to remain trapped inside.
Becoming a new god may sound like a deal, but again, this still keeps everyone inside the nightmare, plus one can only wonder what nefarious reasons the Old Ones have for wanting to turn you into their child…
Well, regardless, the nightmare is here to stay.
