10 Board Games That Would Make For Great Video Games

6. Firefly: The Game

The Dice Tower review of the game noted that while the Firefly theme is present, the game itself does not feel like Firefly. This is down to the board game being a pick-and-deliver, courier-in-space affair, while the show was always more about the crew and their often less than legal antics.

Turn the game into an RPG in the vein Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, however, and full advantage can be taken of Firefly’s iconic Malcolm Reynolds and the crew of Serenity to place the characters firmly back at the heart of the experience. Building on that, the conflict between the wealthy, stable Alliance and the lawless Frontier provides ample scope for a deep, and as fans would know, disturbing story, with the space-western theme lending itself to plenty of action-packed set pieces.

But the ‘Get a job, keep flying’ aspect of the board game need not be thrown away. Dodging the flesh-eating, murdering and raping Reavers, Alliance patrols and vengeful former associates, all while scrounging out a living on the Frontier, is very much at Firefly’s heart, and serves as a solid foundation for the exploration, interaction and myriad side-quests central to any RPG.

Firefly may have had a short television run but did not acquire its cult status for nothing. The Outer Worlds did the space-western well. Firefly will do it better.
