10 Board Games That Would Make For Great Video Games

3. Magic: The Gathering

This one is going to be controversial. DOTA and League of Legends have dominated the MOBA E-sports scene for nigh on a decade now. There would seem to be no need and no point in throwing another contender into the ring.

But Magic: The Gathering has clout. The game boasts a Pro tour of its own, and in 2016 had over 20 million players with 1 million participating in tournaments. With that kind of support a foray into the E-sports scene makes good sense.

But why a MOBA-style game? With a rich universe brought to life by some truly phenomenal artwork, MTG would seem ripe for conversion to an RPG rather than an RTS. However, with the game focus on one-on-one duels between individual planeswalkers utilizing relatively low numbers of summoned creatures, the small unit, real-time tactics battles of a MOBA are a more natural fit.

Where Magic can set itself apart is through its use of ‘lands,’ or planes. Not only will the different planes provide an array of visually appealing maps, but by implementing real-time transformation of the battlefield – a transformation that directly affects gameplay – you will have a game that not only looks different but plays different.

Seasoned board gamers will likely groan at the prospect of seeing yet more Magic, but competition is always good, and in MOBA arena this is a game that can truly hold its own.
