10 Brilliant Playstation One Games We Are Still Playing

4. Final Fantasy VII

The world's favourite role playing computer game franchise - Final Fantasy - spawned this entry - Final Fantasy VII for the PSX in 1997. Three years in development, it was originally intended for the N64 but the cartridges could not contain the whole game so it made its debut on the PSX where it became a best seller. It has sold 10 million copies - making it the best selling entry in the Final Fantasy series so far. It was the first game in the series to feature a 3D environment and the main protagonist is Cloud Strife, a mercenary who joins eco-terrorists AVALANCHE to battle a mega corporation called Shinra who are draining the energy of the world, but there are even more sinister forces to face in the form of Sepiroth. Final Fantasy VII is not my cup of tea - I'm not into Role playing computer games. I tried to play it but I couldn't grasp the controls. However, I have watched other people play it and I can appreciate the time, effort and energy the developers put into the game. Final Fantasy was released after an expensive and mammoth advertising campaign. It is recognised as 'The game that sold the Playstation' and also as a game that helped to popularise the Japanese style of RPG computer games in the West. In 1997, it won Game of the Year and I'm sure fans are still playing this RPG 17 years after its release, such is its longevity and enjoyability factor.
