3. Team Fortress 2
Now, there wasn't anything wrong with the first Team Fortress game by any means. It was a perfectly playable multiplayer first-person shooter - and in many ways that was the problem.
Because there hasn't been a shortage of serviceable multiplayer first-person shooters for many, many years now. The fact that there wasn't a huge amount to make Team Fortress stand out meant it ran the risk of being pushed into the background - which would have sucked, given it can be seen to have been a game that really paved the way for the likes of Fortnite and other battle royale games.
Then Team Fortress 2 came out, and the franchise suddenly was packed with extra flavour and personality. Between weird as hell events, quirky and interesting weapons, and even a comic dedicating to fleshing out the series' lore, the game developed a distinct identity that kept many coming back for more.
