10 Classic Enemies That Prove Pokemon Totally Ripped Off Mario

6. Cobrat

With name that's essentially a portmanteau of the words "Cobra" and "Brat" (something so common in the Pokemon franchise; hell even the name 'Pokemon' is a portmanteau of Pocket Monsters), I imagine many would barely bat an eyelid if the Cobrat, as pictured above, appeared totally unaltered in a new Pokemon game. First featured in Super Mario Bros. 2, the Cobrat were a pesky little breed of serpentine critter that popped out of ceramic vases or from beneath the sand, to attack when Mario got too close while traversing the game's desert worlds.

The Similarities

Come on, apart from the fact that Cobrat is red and pictured in a vase, the above two images look strikingly similar, right? Even down to the semi-gormless facial expression that both are wearing on their semi-anthropomorphic faces. Again, it could be nothing more than coincidence, but it just goes to show that Nintendo was already thinking along Pokemon's thought process way before the international monster craze ever began.
