10 Classic Games That Wouldn't Be As Popular Today

7. Grand Theft Auto

Grand Theft Auto was released for PlayStation and computers in 1997. It is an open-world adventure game where you play the role of a criminal working their way up the criminal ladder by doing tasks and missions for various gangs and organisations. It was played from a top-down perspective with some of the environment being in 3D while the rest of the game was in 2D. Grand Theft Auto, unlike many of the previous games mentioned due to its open world nature and replay value, would not have length issues if released today. There are main missions, side missions and activities to complete, so it would qualify as a moderately lengthy game by today's standards. Where Grand Theft Auto would fall however, is in the other aspects of the game. The most obvious (and possibly unfair) aspect is the camera. Although, an obvious choice (at least in part) due to technological reasons, this style of camera makes the game unuser-friendly as it makes it hard for the user to see what is going on and also to see what is ahead of you when driving. Also, if released now, then Grand Theft Auto would have lost a lot of its appeal. It was originally loved for its feeling of freedom and ability to do what you wanted but those aspects are just standard now. This shows how much harder gamers are to impress nowadays. Although, there is a lot of variation in what is available for the player to do, the game-play itself is not varied and would be perceived as boring by modern gamers. No matter what activities or mission is being played, the game-play is very similar - always consisting of driving and shooting. Also, there is little to no narrative in the game. All of the characters are generic with no background or story to anything. You do missions and gain ranks. That's it. Today, that would not be accepted and be seen as lazy and inadequate in today's market.

I am a Computer Games (Art and Animation) student who is very passionate about gaming. I have grown up playing, analysing and making video games. I'm interested in all types of gaming. Although, I make it seem like it so, gaming is not my entire life! I enjoy drawing, photography, learning, reading, golf, snooker, travelling and (of course :p) spending time with my other half.
