10 Classic Multiplayer Video Games You Must Play Before You Die

7. Gauntlet (Arcade)

It took the arcades to really open up the door to the potential fun to be had with multiplayer gaming. And it was none other than hack-and-slash classic, Gauntlet, to really take advantage of four player combat modes.

Released in 1985, Gauntlet was a top-down affair where your chosen warrior has to fight their way through hordes of devilish nasties through a series of dungeons. It was unforgiving and frantic, but its multiplayer options meant that this beast of a game could be tamed with a few friends at your side.

Although Gauntlet wasn't the first arcade cabinet built for four players, it was by the far one of the most successful. Spawning a series of sequels and home console releases, Gauntlet would also inspire more arcade games to take the multiplayer cabinet route. Four player classics such as The Simpsons, WWF WrestleFest, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, wouldn't have existed without the original life force of Gauntlet that came before them.
