10 Classic Nintendo Games That NEED A Re-Release
2. Super Mario 64
Like Super Mario Sunshine, there's every chance that a Super Mario 64 re-release might actually happen, given the persistent rumours of an upcoming 3D Mario bundle to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the original Super Mario Bros.
Unlike Super Mario Sunshine, however, there are two very different versions of this game, so it's unclear how a 64 re-release would work. Both the 64 and DS versions were plagued by their respective consoles' hardware restrictions, but the Switch's capabilities and (thank God) presence of two analogue sticks makes it the ideal system for a 64 re-release.
While purists might long for a straightforward upgrade of Super Mario 64, the DS version added thirty new Power Stars and a handful of interesting environments. While playing as multiple characters seemed a fun idea on paper, however, in reality this translated to a tonne of room swapping for very situational benefits.
A Super Mario 64 remake on the Switch could take a best of both worlds approach, combining the better aspects of the DS version (a cleaner visual style, new stages and Stars) and the original (not having to play as the under-powered Yoshi).
Whatever form it takes, it's clear that fans are desperate for a remake of what is arguably the most influential 3D videogame of all time -- especially after the return to the classic Mushroom Kingdom at the end of Odyssey.
