10 Classic Video Games That Play Horribly Today

9. Resident Evil (PlayStation)

Tomb Raider 1

The original Resident Evil is credited with putting survival-horror on the map, and even though it learned everything it knows from the 1990s Alone in the Dark trilogy, revisiting today feels like a punch to the childhood.

Gaming has moved on in many ways since the T-virus first broke out on PlayStation. Voice acting and writing, for instance, are more sophisticated than they were back then. Try listening to Resident Evil's hammy dialogue without cringing. Hard.

Okay, so it offered a few good scares - the most famous of which being when some infected dogs pounced through a window, but you'll die of embarrassment when looking back at the ropey, pixelated mutts you were actually afraid of in 1996.

All of this could be forgiven if it actually played well. Sadly, tank-like controls make journeying through the Spencer Mansion an awkward slog for anyone without a prescription for powerful rose-tinted specs.

If you're after a history lesson that will teach you where the survival-horror genre originated from, check out the original Alone in the Dark, but if you want a classic example of one, try one of the more refined games Resident Evil paved the way for, such as Silent Hill 2.
