10 Classic Video Games That Play Horribly Today
4. Double Dragon (Arcade)
Those of a certain age will have cherished memories of feeding vast quantities of pocket change into an arcade machine with the words 'Double' and 'Dragon' plastered across the top. If you want those memories to remain intact, never seek out this version of the beat-em-up classic to revisit in a modern context.
You'll realise that what was once a raw blast of adrenaline sought only to cheat you out of coins with its grossly unfair difficulty curve. An entire generation was naieve to keep feeding money into these things.
Double Dragon is one of the most influential games of its kind, and it was ported to everything with a screen. The NES version was one of the most popular, and that comes with its own set of drawbacks today. Chief among them, it's slow and sluggish to the point that you just want to play Final Fight instead.
What was once viewed as instant playability now feels like simplicity, and not in a good way. The wave of brawlers that followed Double Dragon introduced a broader array of moves to stave off repetitiveness, and if you played any of those over the years, it's hard to go back.
Thanks for the memories, Double Dragon, but retirement is where you should stay.
