When Nintendo first released SSB on the N64, they had no idea of the giant they had created. Melee and Brawl soon followed and dominated the market for extended periods. Sony needed to capitalise on this success, but how best to emulate the success of a game that created its own niche? Copy it down to the finest details of course.

The massive selling point for SSB/M/B is the character roster drawing from all of Nintendo's properties, which Sony tried to replicate this with their own list of PlayStation A-Listers. Dante, Kratos, Big Daddy and Sack Boy all made it into the final game but... that was about it. Meanwhile, Nintendo had Link, Mewtwo, Mr. Game and Watch and a ton more.

The worst thing was, Sony decided to omit characters such as Lara Croft and Crash Bandicoot, making for a B-list of characters that were relevant at the time, but does anyone remember Emmett Graves?

Super Smash Brothers had even already taken Solid Snake, meaning Sony were left with Raiden. Great.
