10 Confusing Video Game Levels Everyone Got Lost In

1. The Blood Trail - Max Payne

The Blood Trail, from a story and character perspective, is a unique and brutal look into the hole in Max's soul where his family used to be in the original Max Payne game. How it has swallowed him, leaving him lost in a maze of his own guilt, forever following a blood trail across a world drowned in black, knowing that he will not like what waits for him at the end. But what else is there for him anymore?

From a gameplay standpoint, though, this level is infuriating. Yes the themes at play are hauntingly beautiful, but the maze is so confusing that you will get what the game is trying to tell you...and then be stuck there for approximately 10 minutes more, trying dead-end corridor after dead-end corridor until you lose your mind.

The only clue you have as to which way to go is the sound of screaming off in the distance. And if this game was made on more advanced audio software, that would help. As it stands, the echo isn't nearly effective enough to lead you in the right direction, often just being bait for yet more dead ends.

The Blood Trail is the most infuriating example on this list. It's easy to appreciate what it's trying to do, but in practice, all those juicy metaphors get buried underneath frustrating gameplay.
